Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are known to be one of the most common types of bacteria infections in the United States. It occurs when bacteria multiply in the urethra track.
If a UTI is not treated soon enough, it is possible for the infection to spread to the kidneys, which can be very dangerous. This is why it is important for you to be aware of what the symptoms of UTIs are. Here is a brief overview of the symptoms, risk factors, and diagnosis of urinary tract infections.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

Some of the most common symptoms that are known to be associated with UTIs include frequent urination, a burning sensation when urinating, and passing only a tiny amount of urine. Women have a tendency to feel a lot of pressure in the pubic area, which may be what causes them to feel the constant urge to urinate. Men will generally feel a sense of fullness in the rectum. Although there are some people who do not experience any symptoms with a UTI, this is very rare. Most people who experience a urinary tract infection just generally feel uncomfortable. Some people also feel fatigue, an upset stomach, and various other side effects when they have a UTI.

Risk Factors of Urinary Tract Infections

It is also important to consider the risk factors of UTIs. Although a urinary tract infection can affect just about anyone, there are certain groups of people who may be more susceptible to experiencing the problem. Diabetics, catheter users, and adult women are known to be more at risk of experiencing an UTI. The reason that women are known to be affected by UTIs more than men is because the bacteria from their anus and vagina enter the urethra. Women who are sexually active are even more at risk for urinary tract infection than those who are not. Kidney stones and enlarged prostates are health problems that may increase one’s chance of experiencing a UTI.

Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infections

In order to diagnose a UTI, you will need to give a “clean catch” urine sample. To do this, you will need to wash the genital region and then collect a sample of urine in a sterilized container. The urinalysis test will determine whether you have a bacteria infection and will see how effective certain medications are at treating the UTI. In addition to taking a medication to treat the UTI, it is likely that the doctor will also recommend you to drink unsweetened cranberry juice, as this is known to help kill the bacteria that causes this infection.

If you suspect that you may have a urinary tract infection, it is important to visit your primary care physician right away. Detecting the UTI early on will help prevent the infection from spreading to the kidneys. Keep in mind that if you experienced the symptoms of urinary tract infections along with a fever, then there is a possibility that the infection has already spread to the kidneys. At this point, you will want to seek immediate medical attention.
