Five Million People in the World Suffering Lupus

According to WHO data of about 5 million people worldwide suffer from lupus, while in Indonesia the number reached 200 thousand people. Hopefully, this figure does not constitute an iceberg phenomenon. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which titled as a thousand faces disease and a lot more attack woman at the productive age of 15-45 years.


It is told by the Minister of Health, dr. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, MPH, Dr.PH on Candle Night Throphy ceremony commemorating World Lupus day in Jakarta, May 9, 2010.

According to Minister of Health, the Lupus disease in immunology, is the opposite of cancer or HIV / AIDS. In lupus, the body becomes overreacting to a stimulus from something foreign that makes too many antibodies that impact against the body's own tissues.

Menkes added, Lupus disease is known to have three different forms: the first is cutaneous lupus (CL), which affects the skin. Second, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which attacks the body's organs such as skin, joints, lungs, blood, blood vessels, heart, kidney, liver, brain, and nerves. Third, Drug induced lupus (DIL), which arise from use of certain drugs. After use of the drugs is discontinued, symptoms usually disappear.

On the occasion, Minister of Health recommends that Odipus (people living with Lupus) in order to avoid stress, maintain body to not directly exposed to sunlight, reducing excessive workload and avoid the use of certain drugs.
On this occasion, Minister of Healt gave appreciation and thanks to the entire committee, initiated by Syamsi Dhuha Foundation and the odapus for his cooperation so that this event was held properly.

Through encouraging partnerships and the professions, universities and NGOs in disease control programs in a comprehensive and integrated Lupus, Menkes believes Lupus problem can be tackled together.
