Natural Ways To avoid Colds & Flu

While they not classified as dangerous medical conditions, colds and flu are illnesses that are hard to deal with, since they are generally inconvenient.
There are a lot of medicines available to treat these common sicknesses, but the best solution is still prevention. Here are some tips that are proven to strengthen the immune system and lessen the chances of developing colds and flu.

coldExercise regularly–The immune system’s cells are affected when a person is overweight of has high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, and this is the same case when a person is also underweight. Aside from being a catalyst for weight lost, exercise is also key in improving immunity. However, it should be done in moderation: too much or super intense workouts can increase the body’s production of hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin resulting in the suppression of the immune cell function.

Wash hands regularly–The most common way to catch a cold or the flu is through transmission of germs from infected people. People are constantly touching or using their hands without forgetting that thousands of bacteria can be picked up just about anywhere, thus it is extremely important to be clean and sanitary all the time, starting by washing your hands often.

Eat fruits and vegetables–Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients that are rich with antioxidants that help boost the immune system. Eat at least four to five servings of raw fruits and vegetables everyday day to boost immune system.

Choose lean protein–Amino acids found in protein form the building blocks of all the body’s cells, including the cells of our immune system. Choose several ounce portions of lean protein such as beans, soy products, eggs, lentils, poultry, and seafood.

Limit fat and sugar intake–Diets high in sugar and fast directly damages the immune system by decreasing the function of T-cells. Instead, substitute bad fats with unsaturated fats that can be found in olive oil, nuts, avocados, sesame seeds, etc. It also helps to increase intake of foods rich in omega-3 acids such as salmon and tuna, or taking omega-3 supplements, which can be found in various health stores.

Take vitamins and mineral supplements–The immune system can be greatly affected with marginal deficiency of certain nutrients, particularly A, B, C, E vitamins, iron, selenium, and zinc. Combat this through intake of vitamins and minerals to ensure a healthy immune life.

Drink green tea–Green tea is a rich source of a type of antioxidant called catechin, which greatly benefits the immune system and contribute to total wellness. Try substituting coffee for green tea.

Get plenty of rest–Getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night ensures a well-rested body that is less prone to infection. If one gets less than the recommended number of hours for rest, 30-minute naps in the afternoons are highly recommended in order to recharge the body and the immune system. If a person lacks sleep, the immune system also suffers, making one more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
